if you have ever listened to el guante, you know that within some of the most poetic lyrics around lies also one of the more progressive, and often reflective messages about hip-hop, politics, organizing, and life around.

this mixtape hits you in the face just a little bit more.

conscious is not enough brings that same message but lets you get a pretty clear (well vivid, very vivid) picture of what that message is after one listen. and unlike some of the other in your face political messages in hip-hop, its much more down to earth at the same time.

on tracks like 'your boyfriends a republican', well i think you get it, its much more personal than a 'the system sucks and the industry is corrupt' message and can really hit home rather than just making people angry...and for example from 'conscious is not enough':

these conscious rappers get props for not being wack
and our radio is filled with monotonous crap
but our kids need a lot more than positive rap
so fuck the revolution join a union
or run for school board we need more than music

this mixtape does a great job of getting the big picture across but at the same time takes the issue and makes it visible to almost anyone anywhere. it can get in your face now and again, but in the end, really lives up to its title.

video || big quarters - barter system

big quarters recently released a new video, "barter system", from their new and completely never done before system of "big quarters direct". its not an album, but a subscription in which for $5 one gets 5 new tracks... monthly.



the video presents an all star cast of minneap rap with appearances from p.o.s., m.anifest, benzilla, toki wright, mike mitclan, sims, and more that i probably didn't recognize.

jake one releases track from white van music

jake one, producer from seattle, released a track from his upcoming album white van music set to be released on rhymesayers 7 october. probably one of jake's most recognized tracks is "rock co. kane flow" from de la soul's the grind date, but his production spans most of the hip-hop world from e-40 to i self divine. much of the same should be expected on the album.

don't believe me? the track, titled "the truth" (and you can guess who will be making an appearance on a track with that title) features freeway and brother ali. also on jake's myspace is a track from the album with mf doom.
